WiMAX deployments hit by economic downturn

BWA/WiMAX subscribers worldwide reached 2.68 million in Q3 2008 – a more modest 13% growth over the first quarter and a 91% increase over Q3 2007, according to the 6th issue of the WiMAXCounts Quarterly Report from Maravedis. Norwegian railway communications on track with NSN

The Norwegian National Rail Administration (Jernbaneverket) and Nokia Siemens Networks have signed a 20-year support agreement for the complete maintenance of the country's railway communications network. The contract which includes hardware services, spare-parts management, software support and upgrades will provide Norway’s rail system with a high-performance, always-on communications system. It follows Nokia Siemens Networks’ implementation of a new digital GSM-Railways (GSM-R) mobile network.

NSN grabs Thailand's major 3G contract

Thailand's DTAC has signed a frame agreement with Nokia Siemens Networks as one of its two vendors to upgrade its network to 3G. In the frame contract, Nokia Siemens Networks will deliver radio access network with both 2G and 3G technologies to DTAC. In the Core network, DTAC's Circuit Switch will be enhanced to accommodate 2G/3G, and a Packet Switch will be introduced for high speed packet access (HSPA). More

Alcatel-Lucent & Megatel sign enterprise deal

Megatel, a telecommunications and networks solutions provider in Morocco, and Alcatel-Lucent have signed a distribution agreement to supply voice and data communications solutions for enterprises and administrations. Vodafone trials 16Mbps mobile broadband

Vodafone has successfully trialled an evolution of mobile broadband technology achieving actual peak data download rates of up to 16 Mbps. The high speed data connection was achieved during field trials of HSPA+ 64QAM technology on Vodafone Spain's network. Vodafone now plans to trial mobile broadband data connections with peak rates of up to 21Mbps early in 2009 using HSPA+ MIMO functionality. More

Motorola cuts more jobs, eyes US$1.5B savings

Motorola, Inc. today announced further cost reduction actions, primarily associated with the Company's Mobile Devices business. TTSL teams up with Nokia Siemens Networks

Tata Teleservices Limited (TTSL), India's youngest telecom service provider, has partnered with Nokia Siemens Networks for its pan-India GSM network rollout. Nokia cuts jobs, steps up emerging market push

Nokia has announced it is to cut around 600 jobs whilst ramping up its emerging markets strategy with several new handsets and a range of services targeted initially at India. In a press statement, the world's largest handset vendor said it is to cut approximately 450 employees from its Markets unit. This will affect a maximum of 100 staff in its home country of Finland - as well as approximately 130 employees in its research center (again, with a maximum of 100 staff affected in Finland). Another 35 cuts - mostly affecting staff in Finland - will be made in its global process operations unit. The plans are expected to come into effect on January 1, 2009. More
