Handset sales down, smartphones rise, says Gartner

Worldwide mobile phone sales totalled 269.1 million units in the first quarter of 2009, a 9.4 per cent decrease from the first quarter of 2008, according to Gartner, Inc. Smartphone sales surpassed 36.4 million units, a 12.7 per cent increase from the same period last year. Alcatel-Lucent and T-Systems agree on global framework

Ericsson and Avea launch mobile broadband in Turkey

Turkish operator Avea will introduce high-speed mobile broadband services to its more than 12 million subscribers with the help of WCDMA/HSPA and mobile backhaul technology from Ericsson. The companies have signed a four-year contract for HSPA-enabled network. Ericsson will be one of the main suppliers and will integrate and deploy WCDMA/HSPA radio access and packet core networks, as well as a complete mobile-backhaul solution based on microwave transmission and optical transport. Vodafone & NSN to bring 3G in rural New Zealand
