Vodafone Germany and Huawei today announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to conduct a joint test gauging the performance of LTE (Long Term Evolution) in the Digital Dividend Band. This agreement marks a joint initiative to validate LTE’ s application within the Digital Dividend Band (790-862MHz) using Huawei’ s end-to-end LTE solution.

From this summer the cooperation will see Vodafone Germany and Huawei not only demonstrate LTE’ s ability to provide broadband coverage to rural and urban areas, effectively bridging the digital divide between those areas of Germany, but also to prove its compatibility with adjacent technologies such as Digital TV and Digital Radio. The test will be based on Huawei’ s end-to-end solutions and both parties will form a joint working group for conducting the test.

Hartmut Kremling, CTO of Vodafone Germany said: ‘Vodafone is an active player in bringing leading broadband services to Germany. By cooperating with local telecoms authorities, utilising the rich LTE experiences from Vodafone Germany and Huawei, we are confident that the test will be carried out successfully.’

Vincent Pang, Vice President and Head of Huawei Vodafone Business Unit said: “We are very pleased that Vodafone Germany chose Huawei as the partner for this test, which is another milestone for the collaboration between our two companies. Huawei will leverage its cutting edge LTE technologies to ensure Vodafone Germany remains ahead of the market as well as help it to achieve sustainable growth in the future.”

Huawei, a leading China based provider of next generation telecommunications network solutions for operators around the world, today announced that it has launched the world’ s first LTE eNodeB ready for large-scale commercial deployment. This LTE eNodeB is able to fully support a downlink rate of up to 150 Mbps in commercial LTE networks.

By adopting 64QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) and MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) technology with two transmitters and two receivers features, Huawei’ s latest LTE eNodeB is able to maximize the use of the ultra-wide bandwidth of LTE networks. Higher-speed connection can provide end-users with unprecedented mobile data services such as high-definition VOD (Video-on-Demand) and high-simulation video conferencing. The SON (Self Organizing Networks) solution of this eNodeB is able to automatically configure and optimize new cells in an LTE network. With this solution operators can reduce the expenses in operation and smoothly evolve to next-generation networks without much further investment.

Mr. Wan Biao, President of Wireless, Huawei, said:” It is a great milestone in the development of LTE technology. Based on our fourth-generation base station platform, this LTE eNodeB will enable operators worldwide to offer to high-quality LTE services immediately and accelerate the maturity of LTE industry.”

In January, 2009, Huawei was chosen by TeliaSonera to deploy the world’s first commercial LTE network in Norway. So far, Huawei has made over 3000 LTE/SAE contributions to standardization bodies, and finished field tests and trials with world-leading operators such as Telenor and China Mobile.

Sonera continues its accelerated turbo 3G build-out program by introducing mobile broadband services in the 900 MHz frequency. Nokia Siemens Networks and Huawei are the network vendors for the 3G expansion program in the following years.
“Our customers expect the traditional Sonera network quality where ever they are. By investing in the latest technology we can offer mobile broadband to a growing number of customers in a cost-efficient way”, says Esa Rautalinko, CEO of TeliaSonera Finland.

A significant part of the turbo 3G extension will be based on the 900 MHz frequency. In a lower-frequency network, an individual base station serves a larger coverage area, which makes it possible to extend geographical network coverage in an economic way.

”Besides the right timing, the choice of partners is a critical decision. The challenges are great, because we are not only rolling out 3G, but also supporting the fixed-mobile migration in the most rural areas and building a foundation for the evolution to 4G”, Rautalinko continues.

In 2009, Sonera will introduce its turbo 3G network in more than 100 new towns and localities, adding up to a total of 350 localities. More than 1,000 new base stations will be introduced. The company will continue its build-out programme in 2010 and 2011 depending on the market situation and service demand.

Pause in 2G Spending Leads to Largest GSM Revenue Decline Ever

Huawei & ZTE enjoy major market share

In a recently published report by Dell’Oro Group, a trusted source for market information about the networking and telecommunications industries, the worldwide mobile infrastructure market revenue contracted 9 percent year-over-year in the first quarter of 2009 despite a record number of 3G base station shipments. The GSM market experienced its largest year-over-year decline as Chinese mobile operators focused on 3G network deployments.

“The three Chinese mobile operators plan to spend over $20 billion this year on rolling out the initial phases of their 3G deployments,” stated Scott Siegler, Senior Analyst at Dell’Oro Group. “China Unicom’s WCDMA deployment is shaping up to be the single largest 3G deployment in history and was the primary contributor to the most ever – 100 thousand – Node B shipments in the quarter. With the CDMA market declining elsewhere around the world, China Telecom’s spending resulted in the most CDMA base station shipments in over four years. As the two GSM operators, China Mobile and China Telecom focused their spending on the rapid deployment of their 3G networks, spending on their GSM networks significantly declined. We expect this spending to accelerate in the second half of the year,” finished Siegler.

During the quarter, Huawei and ZTE experienced the greatest rate of growth, almost doubling their combined share of the total infrastructure market to over 20 percent compared to the same quarter last year.

GSMA briefs:

China’s Huawei and ZTE experienced the greatest rate of vendor growth in the mobile network equipment market during the first quarter of 2009 according to research firm Dell’Oro Group, almost doubling their combined share of the total infrastructure market to over 20 percent compared to the same quarter last year. Huawei in particular had an extremely strong quarter, roughly doubling its market share to 15 percent, making it the third-largest mobile network vendor in the quarter. Market-leader Ericsson continued its dominance, expanding its share slightly to 33 percent of the market in January-March, while closest rival Nokia Siemens Networks saw its share drop to 21 percent from 24 percent a year ago. Alcatel-Lucent lost third place to Huawei, with a 2 percent fall in market share, to 14 percent. Beleaguered vendor Nortel Networks saw its market share halve, to 4 percent. Dell’Oro noted that total worldwide mobile infrastructure market revenue contracted 9 percent year-over-year in the quarter despite a record number of 3G base station shipments.
