LATEST NEWS & ANALYSIS

Indian Government fearing Telecom Investment as a National Security threat because sensitivity of telecom field

(Indian Telecom Analysis): The Government of India said that national security will not be compromised while enhancing the FDI (foreign direct investment) in telecom sector from 49 per cent to 74 per cent, and also warned against “over reactions” in the name of safety.

The National Security Council of India in a recent move classified telecom as one of sensitive sectors, where FDI from certain countries can be used to subvert national security. It had also criticized the presence of Egypt’s Orascom in Hutchison-Essar a GSM cell operator in India.

“Indians going down on IT & Telecom Investment”.

According to media reports the National Security Council of India in its paper, dubbed about Orascom that the company is one the GSM operator in Pakistan and has a large share in Bangladesh as well, while investment portfolio of middle eastern region.

The paper from NSC India also said “Orascom presence in an Indian company’s board is not in our national security interest as it could gain access to our ICT assets and enhance capabilities of our adversaries in gathering intelligence”.

Minister for IT and Communications (India), Dayanidhi Maran said “National Security is supreme and there can not be any compromise on it”.

A hard cooperation crisis is on the cards between the Defense Ministry and IT and Communication Ministry of India, but Dayanidhi Maran retained that “there is no difference of opinion among Ministries over the issue of national security. All of us are working towards one goal and that is national security”.

Meanwhile the Indian Cabinet decided December 31st as the dead line for inter Ministerial differences and addressing the said concerns especially in the name of national security.

Comparison:
Indians remain strict on so called friendly FDI polices while Pakistan remains open and clear in FDI policy in IT and Telecom sector / investment from any where around the world because of its attractive business and strategic location.

Orascom in Pakistan is the one of the leading telecom GSM operator.  IT and Telecom multinationals are more attracted towards Pakistan because of getting a good chunk of profit for their business investment.
