The wireless services industry is emerging
as the leader of telecommunications business
as people do not want to stick themselves
to one place. Mobility is something everyone
needs in this fast forward life. With the
introduction of Wi-Fi and even WiMax enabled
laptops, PDAs and GPRS powered phones, the
role of wireless for serious usage is increasing.
People are actually utilizing wireless internet
at many places now even in Pakistan.
The
industry is witnessing a fast paced growth
in the WLL sector as new companies are
coming up and offering amazing features.
The WLL versus GSM scenario came into
play when 'limited mobility' became 'extended
mobility' as the cellular operators perceived
it. The regulator played it's part and
facilitated both groups to do some kind
of 'give and take'. The WLL companies
still seem not as happy as the cellular
operators are; this is because of the
stuns WLL companies faced as they realized
their business is not as high yielding
as their business plans projected.
VoIP
is coming in the forefront as the telecom
sector is experiencing it's early years
of deregulation in Pakistan. Globally,
VoIP has become one of the hottest sectors
which even Google is eyeing on. All of
the world's business giants are in one
way or the other targeting 'something'
that relates to VoIP. All of the new telecom
carriers emerging in Pakistan are also
using or planning to use VoIP as the only
backbone to earn from the minutes they
terminate. Another backdrop of this ease
in telecom with VoIP is 'grey traffic'
or illegal traffic which is bringing about
losses to every company that's legal in
telecom sector.
As
the competition gets tough, Quality of
Service (QoS) has become a serious issue.
The postponement of 'number portability'
has definitely benefited some operators
by forcefully keeping their subscribers
loyal to their numbers and indirectly
to their service providers.
