ST-Ericsson, a joint venture of STMicroelectronics (NYSE:STM) and Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC), reported financial results for the second quarter 2009. President and CEO, Alain Dutheil, commented: “During the second quarter our sales performed above normal seasonal patterns. With an increasing number of subscribers logging on to the Internet to access and download data on mobile devices, mobile data traffic growth is doubling every year. In fact, Nokia Siemens Networks expects that at current rates, by 2011, mobile data will overtake voice traffic*, growing exponentially until 2013. Keeping pace with this rapid growth is Nokia Siemens Networks- the company has reached the 500 million mobile data user milestone, accounting for roughly 40% of global mobile data traffic today.

Apple® yesterday announced financial results for its fiscal 2009 third quarter ended June 27, 2009. The Company posted revenue of $8.34 billion and a net quarterly profit of $1.23 billion, or $1.35 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $7.46 billion and net quarterly profit of $1.07 billion, or $1.19 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 36.3 percent, up from 34.8 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 44 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) announced today, that Turkcell, the leading communication and technology company of Turkey, has selected its IP/MPLS solution to transform Turkcell’s nation-wide network to an “All IP” 3G transmission network. Upon completion, expected by early summer 2009, Turkcell will transport a broad suite of premium IP based services with Quality of Service assurances, high-availability, reliability and flexibility.

Zain Nigeria, one of the biggest operations of the group in the Middle East & Africa region is set to grow its market share further. The operator will expand its existing fiber network to ensure superior quality and secure services to a growing subscriber base. On the heels of an immensely successful project to build a 4000 km nationwide fiber backbone network, Zain has extended its contract with Nokia Siemens Networks to handle implementation of the additional 600 km.

By early next year, subscribers in Vietnam will be able to access rich multimedia applications and data intensive services through their mobile phones. Viettel, the country’s leading telecommunications provider is deploying Vietnam’s first 3G network, and has appointed Nokia Siemens Networks as its radio network infrastructure supplier. Product deliveries begin this month. Under the contract, Nokia Siemens Networks will provide the hardware, software and services required to build and manage the network, including skills training for Viettel’s team.

Vivendi announced in a short statement today that it has called-off talks to acquire a majority stake in Zain’s African mobile businesses. Vivendi announced that it is interrupting talks, started some weeks ago, with the Kuweiti Group Zain, to acquire a majority stake in its African telecommunications activities.

Nokia has posted its second quarter results yesterday. The company used its second-quarter results announcement to talk up its Internet services strategy once again, unveiling a target to have 300 million users of its mobile services by the end of 2011. Nokia has put a huge focus on its strategy of combining “services with high-quality devices” as it faces competition from traditional device manufacturers as well as new competition from the PC and Internet industries.

Nokia and Accenture have entered into an agreement for Accenture to acquire Nokia’s Symbian Professional Services unit responsible for Symbian OS customer engineering and customer support. The unit provides engineering consulting and product development services on a global basis to mobile phone manufacturers, as well as chip manufacturers and mobile operators.
