Nokia has put a huge focus on its strategy of combining “services with high-quality devices” as it faces competition from traditional device manufacturers as well as new competition from the PC and Internet industries. Deals with the likes of Loudeye, Twango, Enpocket and Plazes, as well as the US$8.1 billion it spent on digital mapping company Navteq in 2007, have seen its Internet services strategy focus on such key areas as music, games, messaging and location-based services. It is now heavily pushing its new Ovi Store as well as Comes With Music, although both suffered from negative publicity at launch.

Highlights:

Nokia net sales of EUR 9.9 billion, down 25% year on year and up 7% sequentially (down 24% and up 7% at constant currency)

Devices & Services gross margin of 34.0%, up from 33.8% in Q1 2009

Services net sales of EUR 140 million (billings of EUR 207 million). Due to the divestment of the security appliance business in April 2009, services net sales are not directly comparable to prior periods

Cisco and Tata Communications today announce that the companies have teamed to promote the Digital Lifestyle for consumers at home and on the go. The two companies have collaborated to showcase the fusion between Cisco products and the Broadband services offered by Tata Communications, a leading global provider of a new world of communications.

Cisco and Tata have decided that as a first step they will work together on a series of joint promotions to show the benefits of going wireless to consumers in the Gurgaon district. A specially-built mobile van, equipped with Linksys by Cisco home networking solutions and enabled by Tata Communications’ wireless broadband services will travel to residential areas in the Gurgaon locale, and highlight the ease and freedom offered by going wireless and the benefits of a connected lifestyle.

Between July 13 and August 9, 2009, the experiential van plans to travel through Gurgaon residential regions to demonstrate Cisco’s next generation wireless home networking solutions including entertainment routers, wireless adaptor, internet home monitoring camera and network attached storage. These technologies, which use the network as the platform, will highlight experiential demonstrations of wireless home solutions such as internet sharing, wireless printing, home monitoring and video streaming. Consumers will also have the opportunity to win a wireless router on each day of the demonstration by participating in ‘lucky draw’ contests. Customers can benefit from a discount of Rs 200 to Rs 1,000 on various products during the period.

Suresh Balasubramanian, National Sales Director, India, Cisco Consumer Business said, “Cisco and Tata Communications have a shared vision of the wireless home and connected lifestyle. Cisco enables the connected life by delivering communication and entertainment experiences that are more visual, more social and more personal. In this regard, working with Tata Communications helps us to extend the possibilities of a connected life through wireless solutions. This initiative is our way of demonstrating to consumers here how they can harness the full potential of connected life experiences through our wireless offerings.”

Mehul Kapadia, head marketing, Tata Indicom Broadband said, “We are pleased to launch this initiative with Cisco. Cisco’s easy to use home networking products paired with our broadband services make a compelling proposition for consumers to make the transition from wired to wireless home environments. And this experience becomes richer on Tata Indicom broadband, India’s premium internet service provider.”

Ericsson today signed framework agreements on 2G/3G mobile communication equipment and related services for 2009 with two major Chinese telecom operators: China Mobile and China Unicom, valued at USD 1 billion and USD 0.7 billion respectively.

China Mobile and China Unicom have received 3G licenses of TD-SCDMA and WCDMA standards respectively at the beginning of 2009. Together the two operators are currently serving more than 620 million mobile subscribers in China. The newly signed 2009 framework agreements will allow both operators to further improve the capacity and performance of their 2G networks and accelerate the initial build-up of their 3G networks, and consequently ensure richer and more innovative mobile communication services to hundreds of millions of Chinese consumers as 3G takes off in China.

Under the framework agreement signed between Ericsson and China Mobile, Ericsson continues to deliver green solutions to support China Mobile’s network energy optimization and CO2 emission reduction target. Ericsson will also expand GSM/GPRS network coverage and capacity in 18 provinces in China with related services. In addition, Ericsson also supports China Mobile’s 3G network build-out by providing a wide range of innovative TD-SCDMA products and solutions.

Under the framework agreement signed between Ericsson and China Unicom, Ericsson will not only become the main supplier to upgrade China Unicom’s GSM networks in 10 provinces, but also provide the operator with GSM/WCDMA core network and/or wireless access system in 15 provinces, including transmission, IP and value-added service platform. Ericsson’s strong local support team with global experience plays a key role in supporting China Unicom in launching the world’s largest WCDMA commercial networks.

Mats H Olsson, President of Ericsson Greater China, says, “China’s 3G market is growing rapidly and the world is watching closely. As the world’s undisputed leader of mobile communications technology, Ericsson will spare no efforts in supporting the development of China’s telecom industry with our global expertise and technology leadership.”

“Ericsson has been devoted to supporting the development of China’s telecom industry. The signing of the 2009 framework agreements today further enhances the position of Ericsson as the leading mobile communications supplier in China market. Ericsson will work together with China’s operators to ensure rewarding new user experience for Chinese consumers in the 3G era and we are fully confident that we can achieve this objective,” says Olsson.

Mobile communications provider TerreStar Networks Inc. (TerreStar), a majority-owned subsidiary of TerreStar Corporation (NASDAQ: TSTR), announced today the successful launch of TerreStar-1, the world’s largest, advanced commercial communications satellite. Today’s launch is a major achievement in TerreStar’s strategic vision of delivering voice, data and video services on an all IP next-generation mobile broadband network that combines the power of TerreStar-1, an all-IP core network, and the latest in smartphone technology.

Launched by Arianespace from Kourou, French Guiana today, TerreStar-1 is the foundation for TerreStar’s satellite communications network; ensuring network resiliency and availability during times of critical communications need.

“With the successful launch of TerreStar-1, we are redefining the mobile communications landscape,” said Dennis Matheson, CTO of TerreStar. “We are creating a new paradigm in mobile broadband network services and devices that will leverage our integrated satellite and terrestrial communications components to enable true ubiquity and reliability – anywhere in the United States and Canada.”

“Today’s launch is just the beginning of the TerreStar story,” said TerreStar President, Jeff Epstein. “We believe there are tremendous opportunities ahead – in both the commercial and government sectors – and we remain focused on our promise to help solve the critical communications and business continuity challenges faced by government, emergency responders, enterprises and rural communities.”

Prior to the launch of TerreStar-1, the Company, with its partner EB (Elektrobit), introduced the world’s first quad-band GSM and tri-band WCDMA/HSPA smartphone with integrated all-IP satellite-terrestrial voice and data capabilities. Similar in size to today’s mainstream mobile devices, TerreStar’s dual-mode smartphone will allow users to seamlessly and securely stay connected to TerreStar’s satellite and terrestrial network.

TerreStar’s network will operate in two 10-Mhz blocks of contiguous MSS spectrum in the 2 GHz band throughout the United States and Canada – with a spectrum footprint that covers a population of nearly 330 million.

In a joint ceremony held at Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Headquarters, PTCL and Trans World Associates (TWA) have signed an agreement on establishment of local Internet peering for routing of domestic email and Internet traffic. It was decided that initially the link between two parties will be of Fast Ethernet providing a peering capacity of around 80 to 90 Mbps.

This arrangement will bring cost efficiency vis-à-vis international IP bandwidth by restricting local internet traffic within the country. Besides that, it will also provide routing efficiency especially in accessing the locally hosted websites. Considering as a major step towards Information Communication Technologies (ICT) revolution, the arrangement will also have an indirect impact on proliferation of local internet content development in the country.

In continuation to its role as an industry facilitator, PTA was mutually working with PTCL and TWA for establishment of Local Internet Exchange Point(s) in the country. In this regard a number of discussions and deliberations were carried out by PTA and necessary solutions for implementation of said peering arrangements were conversed.

Chairman PTA, Dr. Mohammed Yaseen in his remarks appreciated the efforts of the ICT Directorate of PTA, PTCL and TWA for working on the project and said that this initiative would bring a remarkable effect on Internet industry of Pakistan. The Chairman also highlighted that the ICT Directorate at PTA has embarked on several other projects that would soon bring fruitful benefits and productive results for the consumers and the industry. PTCL and TWA valued PTA’s exertions and ensured their continuous corporation for the betterment of Internet industry.

It may be noted that Internet Service Providers (ISPs) of Pakistan seek international Internet connectivity through PTCL and TWA. The domestic Internet traffic originated by ISPs of the country is being routed through international hops as currently no mutual peering points exist in Pakistan. The present routing scenario is resulting in unnecessary delay for the local internet traffic, burden on International Internet links and increase in average per bit delivery cost of ISPs. With this agreement, all such issues will be addressed and local internet traffic will be fastest.

Vodafone Essar has completed a rapid service expansion into seven new regions across India. People living in or traveling to Assam, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, North East and Orissa will now be able to use services provided by India’s second largest GSM operator. Nokia Siemens Networks, Vodafone Essar’s existing infrastructure partner in 12 regions, undertook the new network roll out in just ten months.

The planning and building of the seven networks was undertaken as in the first phase of a three year expansion contract awarded to Nokia Siemens Networks in 2008. Further expansion will carry on through 2010.

Nokia Siemens Networks has a strong track record in speedy network roll out, and in India alone it sets up 5,000 base stations a month. With this contract, the company has emerged as the largest network implementation partner for Vodafone in India, with more than 80% of Vodafone’s subscriber traffic in the country flowing through infrastructure set up by Nokia Siemens Networks.

“We are proud to partner with Vodafone Essar as it charts an aggressive growth strategy and are committed to helping it realize its goals,” said C B Velayuthan, Head, Vodafone Customer Team, Nokia Siemens Networks. “India’s vast geography and varied topology, in addition to the acute power shortage in remote areas, make network expansion a challenging task. Our Flexi Base Station and services capabilities are the ideal solution for service providers who want to achieve more, with less.”

Nordea Bank Norge ASA and Telenor have entered into a three-year contract for a new telephony solution. The agreement includes a complete renewal of the exchanges at the head office and regional offices with a new switchboard support system that allows the seamless integration with mobile telephony (ProffNett).

Nordea is the largest bank in the Nordic region. It is also Norway’s second largest bank with approximately 3,500 employees in Norway. The agreement Nordea has entered into with Telenor is worth approximately NOK 30 million per year and runs for three years. Nordea chose Telenor because of its positive experience with Telenor’s previous telephony services and a fully integrated solution for fixed-line and mobile telephony which will help reduce the bank’s overall telephony costs and increase availability. Telenor will supply new exchanges with a switchboard support system and fixed-line and mobile telephony. The new solution will be supplied, tested and rolled out in autumn 2009.

An important step for Nordea is the replacement of its DECT wireless telephones with the flexible ProffNett solution for mobile telephony. The new solution also allows Unified Communication solutions so that Nordea can gradually start to use the “future’s branch offices”. The agreement allows for cooperation on this point and other innovative solutions to support Nordea’s business processes.

“Telenor appreciates the trust Nordea has demonstrated by handing over the supply and operation of such a business-critical system to Telenor,” says Ragnar Kårhus, head of Telenor in Norway.

“Nordea is extremely pleased with this cooperation on the development of a technically and commercially better telephony solution for the Norwegian part of the bank’s operations,” says Gunn Wærsted, Managing Director of Nordea in Norway.
